Beyond simply being a fan art and a personal reinterpretation of the iconic character Hatsune Miku, this illustration represents my attempt to replicate the aesthetic of futuristic advertising posters popular in the early 2000s. To achieve this look, I drew inspiration from vintage advertisements for consumer electronics of that era, such as those by Nokia and Motorola. I didn't just replicate the visual style of vintage advertisements, I replicated their content structure as well, adding a subtle layer of irony directed at modern smartphone and the current bond between human and technology.
The decision to feature Hatsune Miku was deliberate; she was a prominent figure within the otaku culture surrounding anime and manga during that period. For her redesign I drew inspiration from 2000s youth fashion and the Cyber Grunge aesthetic. My intention was to give her an extravagant and contemporary look, but with a futuristic accent.
Initially, the concept was built around a fictional advertisement for audio headphones (which explains her presence in the character's context). However, I ultimately decided to replicate the Motorola Razr V3, as it genuinely stood as a status symbol in the 2000s.
The headphone was based on Sennheiser PXC 450.
